In this workshop, you will learn to loosen up your painting style so that you can paint more expressly. To preserve the freshness and uniqueness of your personal brush stroke, you will learn to paint quickly, loosely, and with playful intention.

First you will complete three short painting exercises flowing from expressive realism to expressive abstraction to expressive nonobjective art forms, following a simple process. The following three paintings are expressive examples of those three art forms.

You will choose one of the art forms you practiced and use it to create a larger painting following the same loose and expressive process. In this workshop, Susan will demonstrate and coach you as you work.

You will receive a supply list when you register. The $10 extra supply fee is payable at the beginning of the workshop. This fee includes items not available in small quantities.

Susan Lackey has been painting and teaching painting for many years. She paints in acrylic and mixed media. She has won numerous awards in local, state, and national exhibitions. She is a signature member of the Watercolor Society of North Carolina.

Class: Ages 18 and up. Minimum class size: 5, maximum class size 15

Supply List: Painting Abstracts

Each participant should bring these supplies to the class:

• Canvas: Any size you want to work with between 11x14 or 12x12 on the small side to 18x24 max because of space constraints. If you prefer to paint on an easel, you may bring your portable table easel.

• Acrylic Paint: Bring professional grade or high-quality student grade, not craft paint. You will need white and 3 colors that you think look good together. We will not use black or gray, but at least one of your colors should be dark. You can always lighten a color with white, but you can’t darken it. Optionally, you can bring several different variations of your 3 colors. Example: if blue is one of your colors, you can bring cobalt blue and cerulean blue (or any other of the blues.)

• Acrylic Brushes: Bring at least one 1” or 2” flat, one ½” flat, and one medium size round.

• Pallet: Bring what you normally use or a few dinner-sized Styrofoam or stiff paper plates, or freezer paper with tape to tape the edges down. I use freezer paper taped to a scrap piece of foam core.

• Water container: Bring a plastic wide mouth container with at least a 3” opening. Cool Whip containers, coffee containers, or small buckets are good containers.

• Spray bottle: Any size will work, bring what you have.

• Paper Towels: Bring a roll.

• Sketch book or pad: Any brand with a sturdy white paper is okay, not the type with newsprint. You will need this for note taking and experimentation.

• Pencil: with a sharp point

• Table cover: Please bring a plastic table cover. The $1 types from the Dollar Store are good.

• Wear: Old clothes or bring an apron or old shirt to protect your clothes.

• Optional: Any kind of plastic or nitrile gloves will save your hands.

• Optional: Small hair dryer to speed up the paint drying process.

• Optional: any tool to spread or scrap paint. Example: old credit card, silicone wedge. Don’t buy for this class.

• Provided by instructor: The extra supplies fee of $10 is payable to the instructor in class

1. Old credit card scrapers for you to use

2. Water-soluble marking tools that you can try: Caren D’Ache wax pastels, Inktense pencils, Stabilo Woodies

3. Printed handouts on shape, line, value, color, center of interest, and the What Else Check List (this Check List is sold for $5 outside of my classes)

4. Other bulk items as needed
