SOUTHERN PIEDMONT WOODTURNERS

Invites you to enjoy an evening with

Bill Stricker

“Windsor style 3-legged stool”

The March demonstrator for SPW will be Bill Stricker, a Southern Piedmont Woodturner.  Bill is a native of Kannapolis..  Bill's family settled in Cabarrus County in the early 1800's acquiring property in Mt. Pleasant and the Gibson Mill area of Concord.  Bill became interested in making and repairing furniture in the early 1980's.   This led to his interest in turning parts for his new and repaired furniture, as it became more difficult to find matching pieces for his repairs and his new Windsor chairs.  As he acquired equipment and skills, he decided to seek out other turners, hoping to refine his abilities and to learn new skills and techniques.  This led him to SPW about 2013.

Bill will be demonstrating how he turns and assembles a Windsor style 3-legged stool.  He will take us step-by-step from choice of materials, design considerations, including historical insights, turning and construction techniques as well as finishing processes.  The objective of his presentation is to provide new turners with a vision to help them grow as turners and to challenge experienced turners to try a new project which will provide an opportunity to refine specific skills and try a new way to put their turned pieces into a different context than what they might have done before.

Note-- Official meet time starts at 6:30; but social hour starts at 5:30 so come early!

The Southern Piedmont Woodturners meet on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 6:30 pm until 9:00 pm.  We meet at our studio (#122) at Clearwater Artist Studios,  223 Crowell Drive NW, Concord, NC 28025.  Members begin to arrive around 5:30 pm and the program is usually finished by 9:00 pm.

We usually have an "Instant Gallery" of members’ items they bring to demonstrate how previous demonstrators have influenced their work.  We also have a raffle of items to raise funds for the club.

In addition to Clearwater Artist Studios, the SPW is associated with the Cabarrus County Arts Council (CCAC), the American Association of Woodturners (AAW), and the North Carolina Woodturners Association (NCWA).

To inquire about club activities, see the club website and find contact info there.  Or, you may always call the ClearWater Artist Studios Manager, Sarah Gay at 704-784-9535 who can help assess who best to talk to.
